+ Positives:

+ Good basic metal bed frame with a uniform gunmetal matte black powder coating.
+ Easy to assemble, with all junctures and assembled parts having a fairly precise fit.

- Negatives:

- This frame may not fit a 60"-wide queen mattress (luckily, my queen box spring is 59.5" wide), depending upon how much variability is in the production lots of these frame sections.
- Two of the seven support legs are screw-on plastic tubes that are slightly short and do not really contribute to balancing the total load on the bed frame.
- I wish that the five cone-shaped glides and two plastic tube legs were made of metal instead of plastic for better strength and durability.

What is in the box package?

o Two metal frames with swing-out lateral arms.
o One metal center support bar for use on full and queen beds.
o Five plastic cone-shaped glides that fit onto the metal legs at the four corners of the assembled bed frame, with the fifth glide fitting on the metal leg at the center of the center support bar when assembled as a full or queen frame.
o Two plastic leg tubes that screw into the center of the swing-out lateral arms of the two main frame sections.
o Bag containing nuts, bolts, washers, and a small wrench.
o Assembly instruction sheet listing the five assembly steps and stating the one-year limited warranty.

Prior to purchasing this specific metal bed frame, I looked at every metal bed frame in the below-$100 price category listed on Amazon. I just wanted a basic sturdy reliable queen-sized metal bed frame, nothing fancy. Some of the reviews of other metal bed frame vendors even mentioned being shipped torn-up dusty boxes that looked all beat up and taped up as if they had been sitting in a warehouse for years or were repackaged after having been previously opened. If I stay within the "Structures by Malouf LinenSpa" brand, there currently are at least three different models listed on Amazon for a queen-sized mattress with prices ranging from $55 to $90.

I first looked at STRUCTURES by Malouf Heavy Duty 6-Leg LINENSPA Adjustable Metal Bed Frame with Double Center Support and Rug Rollers - UNIVERSAL (Cal King King Queen Full XL Full Twin XL Twin), which can be adjusted to fit everything from a king to a twin size. Most of its bad reviews talk about its center support being too weak to support a king mattress. But I did not care to have the frame on rollers and it appears that the rollers' locking mechanism does not work effectively to prevent the bed from rolling.

Next, I looked at STRUCTURES by Malouf Heavy Duty 7-Leg LINENSPA Adjustable Metal Bed Frame with Center Support and Rug Rollers - (Queen, Full XL, Full, Twin XL, Twin). This model appears to be identical to the frame that I purchased and am reviewing in this review, except that the four plastic cone-shaped glides are replaced with rollers at the four corners of the assembled frame. Unlike the model mentioned above, this roller-equipped model, along with the model that I am reviewing here, adjusts to fit a queen to a twin, and does not accommodate a king. From reading the reviews on that model, it seems like the rollers may be structurally weak and some reviewers mentioned the roller-equipped legs bending and collapsing. There were also many comments about the boxes for that product being shipped in a terrible torn-up and taped-up condition.

I also looked at similar metal bed frames offered by other Amazon vendors and, overall, the frames that used roller wheels seemed to have a higher incidence of structural failure caused by the roller-equipped legs bending. So in the end, I opted to purchase this non-roller-equipped bed frame even though there were various frames costing $15 to $35 cheaper. After reading so many negative reviews for bed frames on Amazon, I ordered this frame with a bit of trepidation, but I felt some comfort in knowing that Amazon has a liberal return policy :-)

Note: If you are looking for a bed frame to hold your memory foam mattress or other kind of mattress and you do not have a box spring to place underneath your memory foam mattress, this metal bed frame will NOT be sufficient to support just your mattress by itself without having a box spring underneath the mattress. In this case, if you do not purchase a box spring for use with your mattress, I would recommend placing your memory foam mattress on a support platform such as the Sleep Master - Platform Metal Bed Frame/Foundation (Queen) - Perfect for Spring, Latex, and Memory Foam Mattresses.

The Malouf Heavy Duty 7-Leg LinenSpa Adjustable Metal Bed Frame with Center Support and Glides' notable product features are described and rated below:

Packaging, Style & Appearance: ***** Excellent 5-fuzzies rating

This bed frame was promptly shipped. I ordered this bed frame on a Monday using Amazon's "Free Super Saver Shipping", and it arrived on Thursday. In contrast to the many reviews for the similar STRUCTURES by Malouf Heavy Duty 7-Leg LINENSPA Adjustable Metal Bed Frame with Center Support and Rug Rollers - (Queen, Full XL, Full, Twin XL, Twin) product where reviewers mentioned receiving boxes that were heavily damaged, I received my shipment, shipped in its original Structures-branded box, in pristine condition. The 71.5"x9.0"x3.25" cardboard box was sturdy and there was not a single tear or dent on the box. I carefully opened one end of the box because I wanted to be able to reuse the box if I had to return this product (which I thankfully did not have to do!) The three metal frame pieces and a cardboard box containing the other parts were VERY firmly packed inside the box, and I carefully slid everything out through one end of the box.

Assembly of the bed frame was quick and easy; I assembled it by myself in less than 20 minutes. The included assembly instruction sheet lists the five assembly steps and states the one-year limited warranty. The two main metal frames both have two swing-out lateral arms with rivets that lock into slots on the arms of the opposite frame. For use with a full or queen mattress, another metal center support bar is secured to both metal frames using two carriage bolts, washers, and nuts; this center support bar is not needed for a twin-size frame. The gunmetal matte black powder coating on all metal surfaces was uniform and of high quality. Perhaps because my tightly-packed box arrived without any damage to the shipment, all metal sections, including the leg posts, swing-out lateral arms, and two headboard mounting plates, had no visible damage, bending, or warping.

Design & Features: **** Good 4-fuzzies rating

After I quickly assembled this bed frame, my queen-sized box spring fit into this bed frame without issues. The headboard also quickly mounted into the screw holes of this frame's two headboard mounting plates.

HOWEVER, the maximum width of a box spring that can fit inside this bed frame is 59.70" or 59.75", which is 1/4-inch smaller than the official 60"-width of a standard U.S. queen-sized mattress size. Luckily, my box spring size is 59.5" in width, so my box spring easily fits inside this bed frame. I do not know how much this bed frame varies in its width from one box to the next, nor do I know this frame's maximum width when set up for a twin-sized or full-sized mattress, but this may be a deal-breaker for you if your queen-sized box spring is wider than 59.7". The center support bar that is inserted in between both metal frames and is bolted to them has a bit of wiggle room that could accommodate almost a full 60"-wide box spring. But the problem is that the two swing-out lateral arms have protruding rivets that slide and lock into slots on the opposing arm, and these two locked-together lateral arms cannot extend outward beyond 59.75" in width. Perhaps there was an error in translation or interpretation, and when the manufacturer was told to make the queen-sized frame 60" in width, they interpreted that to mean 60" for the external width of the assembled frame, instead of 60" for the internal width inside of the two rails? After all, the easy fix would have been to add an additional quarter-inch length to the slots on the two swing-out lateral arms so that the rivets on the opposite arms could extend outward an extra quarter-inch.

So before purchasing this bed frame for use with your queen-sized mattress, carefully measure the outer width of your queen-size box spring and check if any part of your box spring is wider than 59.7". If it is, your box spring may possibly not fit inside this frame. If your box spring has a width of 59.5" or 59.6", I think that you should be okay.

This bed frame has 7.0" of clearance underneath it, making it suitable for storing shoeboxes, plastic storage bins, and other items underneath this bed frame. Because this bed frame looks so basic and its four legs look rather utilitarian, and especially since you can store items underneath this frame, you can add a bed skirt to hide the bed frame's legs and items stored underneath the bed to give your bed a neat and stylish look.

Construction & Build Quality: **** Good 4-fuzzies rating

After I placed the box spring and mattress on the bed frame, I noticed that the two support posts that are in the center of the swing-out lateral arms are slightly short and do not touch the floor. If you look at the photos for this product, you will see that five of the seven legs consist of plastic cone-shaped glides that get inserted into the metal legs at the four corners of the bed frame along with one leg in the center of the center support bar. The other two legs consist of two plastic tubes containing a threaded insert that screw into a carriage bolt through a hole where the two pairs of swing-out lateral arms meet in the middle. All five plastic cone-shaped glides sit flat onto the floor, but I can easily slide several sheets of paper underneath the other two plastic tube legs. Since these two tube legs are attached to the middle of the lateral rails at a joint juncture, I presume that these two legs will eventually contact the floor and assist in providing load support if the two connected swing-out lateral arms ever bend and sag over time. So I can only guess that these two tubes were purposely designed to be slightly shorter than the other five cone-shaped leg glides.

The two tube legs and five cone-shaped glides are mostly made of plastic. For better strength and longer-lasting durability, I would have preferred that all seven leg pieces were made of metal with plastic used only where the legs press onto the floor. The five plastic cone-shaped glides are also hollow in the center, resembling traffic pylon cones, instead of being molded as solid plastic cones.

When this bed frame is placed on a wood floor, the plastic cone-shaped glides that press against the wood floor to support the bed are fairly smooth and will not scratch your wood floor if you leave the bed in place. However, if you need to sometimes slide the bed across your wood floor to move it, as added insurance to prevent scratching your floor, you may want to insert some kind of felt-based or carpet-based protector pad underneath the five plastic cone-shaped legs (or four glides if you assembled the frame for a twin-size mattress). The base of these round cone-shaped glides is 2.5" in diameter. But since these cones are hollow in the middle, the center 1.5" at the bottom of each round foot is hollow, surrounded by a 0.5" ring of plastic that forms the base of the leg cone. There are various adhesive-backed felt floor protectors, but they may not work well on the bottom of these cone-shaped glides because the base of the cones are hollow. You need to insert a floor protector that is at least 2.0" in diameter so that it can span across the middle 1.5" hollow opening. If you need to sometimes slide this bed frame across your wood floor, you may consider buying either Waxman 4710495N 2-1/2-Inch Felt Bottom Round Furniture Sliders, Oatmeal or Waxman 4291295N Carpet Based Round Caster Cup, Gray, 2-1/2-Inch to place underneath the cone-shaped glide legs of this bed. You will need five felt-based or carpet-based floor protectors to cover the bottoms of the glide legs on a full or queen frame.

Because there have been so many Amazon bed frame reviews where people have complained of structural failure after placing weight on the bed, and also because I wondered if the two previously mentioned tube legs would finally touch the floor if I placed more weight onto the bed (e.g. perhaps the five bed frame legs would settle deeper into their cone-shaped leg glides), after I placed the box spring and mattress on this bed frame, I jumped up and down on the bed like a trampoline about a dozen times. Other than a bit of squeaking from the box springs, I heard no creaking or strain from the bed frame metal itself. After my mattress trampoline session, I looked underneath the bed and the two plastic tube legs still did not touch the floor. But the other five cone-shaped glides were still adequately supporting the bed with no changes in the metal frame's form or shape. The combined weight of us two adults who use this bed is around 270 to 280 pounds. I cannot say how this bed frame will perform for 400+ or 500+ pounds of human weight placed on the bed, but for us, this bed frame is quite sturdy for both sleep and... ummm... playtime. If you need a bed frame that will support a lot of weight from large-sized adults, my main concern would be that this bed frame is supported by five cone-shaped glides that are hollow in the center of their hard plastic legs. These five cone-shaped glides would be far sturdier if they were molded as solid plastic or, far better, made of the same steel that the rest of the bed frame is made of. And, as mentioned, the bed frame has two other plastic tube legs that do not touch the floor and do not help to distribute the total weight that is placed on the bed frame.

I now feel confident enough in this bed frame's sturdiness that I placed its original shipping box out on the curb to be picked up by the weekly cardboard recycling truck :-)

I purchased this bed frame for $70 and it was promptly shipped with Amazon's free Super Saver Shipping, which is not too expensive, but also not that inexpensive compared to other similar metal bed frames.

Fuzzy Wuzzy's Conclusion:

Overall, this is a good metal bed frame. As mentioned, the frame that I received can only fit a queen-size box spring that is no wider than 59.7" or 59.75". If your queen box spring is wider than this, depending upon how much the size varies from bed frame to bed frame, your box spring either may or may not fit inside this bed frame.

Update: 4 days after I posted this review on Amazon, someone commented on my review that their 60" wide box spring fit inside this frame with no problem. As mentioned, my box spring width is 59.5" wide, and I did not have a queen box spring that was fully 60.0" wide to try fitting inside this frame. But using my tape measure, the inside width between the metal rails of my bed frame only extended out to 59.75". Perhaps there is a little variation in how wide the frame's lateral arms extend outward between different box packages of frames, or perhaps the frame bars have a bit of flex in them to extend outward if a queen box spring that is fully 60.0" wide is placed inside this frame.
